Dr. Albert Leroy Gore, MD, of Raymond, was recently recognized as Family Physician of the Year by the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians’ at its 60th Annual Convention held in Sandestin, Florida, July 18-22, 2009.

This award is presented annually to a physician contributing the most to the development of Family Medicine in the state. It is known as the John B. Howell Memorial Award and was established in memory of Dr. Howell, a pioneer in the practice of Family Medicine and long-time delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians.

From 1952 to 1966, Dr. Gore served the communities of Bay Springs, Miss. and Jackson, Miss. by providing primary care “from the cradle to the grave” to over 2,000 families. He left private practice in 1966 to re-enter the Army, where he earned the title of Brigadier General, and later returned to private practice in 1980.

Dr. Gore, a native of Big Creek, MS, is retired and living in Raymond, MS with his wife, Marianna. They have five children, fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Dr. Gore has been an active member of the American and Mississippi Academy since 1955. The 1,000 plus member Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians is an affiliate of the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), the national association representing more than 95,000 family physicians and medical students. The AAFP in Kansas City, Missouri, was founded in 1947 to promote and maintain high standards for family doctors providing continuing, comprehensive health care to the public.
