R U N 2 Hlth?
Exciting News!
The MS Academy of Family Physicians Foundation is excited to announce that Miss Mississippi 2009-2010, Anna Tadlock, visited 20 schools for the 2009-2010 school year and presented a program entitled, "R U N 2 Hlth?" This program  included aspects of the AAFP Tars Wars and Ready, Set, FIT! programs.
  

DAVID G. HALL, M.D. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation Board of Trustees established the David G. Hall, M. D. Memorial Scholarship to award scholarships to Mississippi high school seniors who have an aptitude in the sciences and an interest in pursuing a career in the field of medicine.  More Information

TAR WARS
Tar Wars is a tobacco-free education program for 4th and 5th grade children sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians. The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (MAFPF) serves as the state coordinator for this program with the mission of educating students about being tobacco-free, providing them with the tools to make positive decisions regarding their health, and promoting personal responsibility for their well-being. By utilizing a community-based approach to mobilize family physicians, educators and other health care professionals to present this program, the MAFPF can accomplish its mission.  More Information

The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation is pleased to announce a new program that encourages and teaches Office Champions to implement system changes to intergrate tobacco cessation activities into daily office routines.  More Information

ASK AND ACT - A TOBACCO CESSATION PROGRAM
The AAFP's tobacco cessation program, "Ask and Act," encourages family physicians to ASK their patients about tobacco use, then ACT to help them quit.  For resources on tobacco cessation, please visit the AAFP Ask and Act web page.

2009 MAFP Fall Conference Presentation by Jennifer Gholson, M.D., Chief Medical Officer, Information and Quality Healthcare - "Stop Blowing Smoke"

READY, SET, FIT!
Ready, Set, FIT! is a school-based educational program, endorsed by the National School Board Association, that teaches third and fourth graders about the importance of fitness. The teacher teaches the program’s four (4) lessons and is encouraged to invite a family physician, medical student, resident or any medical professional, to help kick off the learning experience during the first lesson.  More Information

MAFP FOUNDATION RESIDENTS AND STUDENTS INITIATIVE
These scholarships enable students the opportunity to explore family medicine through clinical sessions, procedural workshops, and interaction with family physicians from across the country. Many emerging leaders develop their leadership skills through participation in the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students.

AAFP/MAFP MEMBERSHIP FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS
Student members are one of the MAFP Foundation's greatest assets. To help cultivate future members and leaders and to encourage student interest in family medicine, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) provides student membership at no cost to medical students.  This free service includes membership in MAFP. Students may join during any year of medical school. More Information

AAFP & MAFP STUDENT EXTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Matching grants of $1250 per externship are provided to the University of Mississippi Medical Center - Department of Family Medicine to allow students to experience first hand what it means to be a family physician. They may also be involved in a research project.  More Information

FAMILY MEDICINE INTEREST GROUP

The MAFP Foundation provides crucial financial support to the campus-based Family Medicine Interest Group at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in order to enhance student interest in family medicine. The FMIG provides resources, programming, and scholarships to the National Conference to students interested in the specialty of Family Medicine.

HEALTH LITERACY PROJECT
This project has been established by the AAFP to address the needs of family physicians who may have patients at risk for low health literacy.

FAMILY MEDICINE CONGRESSIONAL CONFERENCE

The program supports one medical student to attend the annual conference, sponsored jointly by the AAFP and the Academic Family Medicine Advocacy Alliance. The meeting, held in Washington, DC, educates participants on federal issues that affect family medicine.  More Information 

FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAMS

A contribution is made annually to the residency program at the University of Mississippi Medical Center – Department of Family Medicine and to the North Mississippi Medical Center – Family Medicine Residency Center for recruitment and retention of family physicians to rural areas.

This program provides a means by which MAFP members and other constituent chapters can donate funds to colleagues who are disadvantaged by a disaster.
