Ready, Set, Fit! Link to AAFP's website

Ready, Set, FIT! is a school based education program sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians’ fitness initiative (AAFP), Americans in Motion (AIM), and Scholastic.  Ready, Set, FIT! offers skills-based lessons and activities encouraging students to be active, eat smart, and feel good.    The student’s teacher will teach the program’s four (4) lessons and are encouraged to invite a family physician, medical student, resident or any medical professional to help kick off the learning experience during the first lesson.

This education program teaches 3rd and 4th graders about balancing fitness through physical activity, nutrition and emotional well-being.  Together, educators and health care providers can help children recognize the importance of everyday choices to be active, eat smart, and feel good!

MAFPF purchased 200 Classroom Packets at a cost of $10 each from the AAFP which include a teaching guide, informational poster and 30 student guides.  If you are interested in learning more about the program’s curriculum, please review it online at www.readysetfit.org.  Click on the section, “For Teachers”.  Click on “Register Your Classroom.”  Once you register your classroom, the curriculum will be available for your review.  After reviewing the curriculum, if you would like to obtain a Classroom Packet for your classroom, or multiple packets for your school, please contact Kim Erickson at 601-853-3302.  As part of this program, a Fitness Assessment Quiz handout is given to the students as a pre- and post-assessment.  The teacher will report the scores from these tests online and submit an online teacher evaluation.

The students will take the Student Guide home after each lesson for completion of an At-Home Activity with their parents.  This will make the parents aware of the program’s objectives.

If you need help in locating a physician, or someone in the medical profession, to speak to your class, please contact Kim Erickson at at 601-853-3302 or by email at mafpf@netdoor.com.

Tar Wars  Link to AAFP's Website

Tar Wars is the American Academy of Family Physician’s tobacco-free education program for 4th and 5th graders.  The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (MAFPF) serves as the state coordinator for this program with the mission of educating students about being tobacco-free, providing them with the tools to make positive decisions regarding their health, and promoting personal responsibility for their well-being.  By utilizing a community-based approach to mobilize family physicians, educators and other health care professionals to present this program, the MAFPF can accomplish its mission.

The curriculum for this program is available online at www.tarwars.org.  A comprehensive step-by-step teaching guide is available for download under the section, “Classroom Presentations - More- Program Guide and Other Presentation Materials.”  The website also includes sample tobacco ads and science experiments that can be printed and included as part of your presentation.  Please let me know if you do not have access to the internet, and a teaching guide will be mailed to you.  A Power Point presentation is available for download on the Foundation’s website at www.msafp.org/foundationprog.asp that can be used as a teaching tool if your school is equipped with an overhead projection system.  A Presenter Form needs to be completed and returned to the Foundation office for statistical reporting requirements.

A poster contest can be held as part of teaching this program.  The guidelines for the poster contest are available at www.tarwars.org.  One winning poster from each participating school should be mailed to the Foundation for inclusion in the statewide poster contest held in April of each year.  This year’s poster deadline is April 3, 2009.  The State poster winner and one parent win an expense paid trip to Washington, DC to the National Tar Wars Conference which is in July, 2009.  This includes airfare, hotel and meal expenses.  Your school’s winning poster may be sent to the Foundation anytime between now and the deadline of April 3, 2009.

Tar Wars is to be taught in a classroom size environment and should take about one hour to complete.  Please share this program with teachers, administrators, etc. in your school or organization.  The Foundation has pencils and other goodies available for the students.  Please contact Kim Erickson 601-853-3302 or by email at mafpf@netdoor.com for a supply.
