 Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation

 

The Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (MAFPF) is a non-profit support organization.  The primary mission is to improve the health of all Mississippians by promoting and enhancing Family Medicine through the funding of education, research, and community outreach programs which involve medical students, residents and family physicians.  The Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians. 

Goals of the Foundation

The Foundation supports the specialty of family practice and the following goals:

  •     Establish and administer programs of continuing medical education for physicians in the medical specialty of  family practice
  •    Encourage medical students to pursue family practice as their intended specialty in sufficient numbers to meet the family practice needs in Mississippi
  •      Enhance the educational preparation, and training of prospective family physicians at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  •    Research activities in family practice, which ultimately result in improved patient care
  •       Educate the public on the role of the family physician in the delivery of health care
  •      Support the mission of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians

2008 Tar Wars Poster Winner - August Parker of East Jones Elementary, Laurel, MS

As Mississippi's Tar Wars poster contest winner, August Parker attended the National Tar Wars Conference in Washington, DC, July 21-23.  Her poster placed 8th in the National Contest.  Congrats to August Parker!  While in Washington, DC, August met with Senator Thad Cochran, Representative Chip Pickering, Representative Gene Taylor and a representative from Representative Bennie Thompson's office to lobby for anti-tobacco legislation.

David G. Hall, M.D. Memorial Scholarship Winner

Lindsey Garner of East Rankin Academy is the Overall Winner of the David G.

Hall, M.D. Memorial Scholarship. Her essay titled, "The Family Physician:

The Heart of Medicine" was written about the impact that Dr. Howard Clark of Morton, MS has made in her life, as well as the community in which he serves. She is pictured with Dr. Clark, the 2007 MAFP Family Physician of the Year.

MAFP Foundation Announces the $10,000 Drawdown Winners

 

The excitement of the evening resulted in 8 people splitting $10,000.  The winners were Bonnie Baggett, Nurse Practitioner with the New Albany Medical Group winning $3333.33 and seven physicians from the Laurel Family Clinic split the remaining $6666.67: John F. Hassell, M.D., Jack Evans, M.D., Michael Casey, M.D., Terry Pitts, D.O., Chrystal Sumrall, M.D., Rambod Rouhbahksh, M.D., and Jim Doran, M.D.  The Drawdown resulted in earnings of $13,425 for the Foundation.  Thanks to all who supported the Foundation by purchasing and selling drawdown ticket(s).  

 

Silent Auction: A Big Success

 

The silent auction included 176 items that were donated by Mississippi businesses, individuals and Destin businesses.  Thanks to all who donated items and to everyone who participated in the silent auction by bidding on and/or purchasing items.  The Silent Auction resulted in earnings of $10,280 for the Foundation.  Click on the link below to view the 20 top selling items.

MAFP Foundation Receives Legislative Approval to Sell a Specialty License Plate.  The additional cost of the license plate is $31, with $24 benefiting the Foundation.
